Welcome to KONTEXT LABOR BERNAU!

Starting on the 20th June the KONTEXT LABOR BERNAU aims to reinvigorate the Heeresbekleidungsamt (Office of Army Apparel) for two and a half months during the summer of 2015. This building complex was erected in 1939 by the National Socialists and was used by the Russian Army from 1945 to 1994. The historically heavily loaded building will soon have a new lease on life as a housing project. However, before this happens, the Building 1 (Haus 1) will temporarily be transformed into a space of art production and happening, and into a space for education. Moreover, the participating artists consciously and productively integrate the social and historical environment into their work. There is a Bernau city model made from several tonnes of clay which reflects the wishes of the children, teenagers, artists and residents which have participated the modeling process that will continue during the summer. In the second exhibition hall an exhibition in progress is on view. Several seminars from the masters program Art in Context will take place on location and a group of artists will work in situ for a period of four weeks. With their workshops, lectures, discussion, video screenings and music events, they invite the residents to participate in their artistic work and activities, to contribute to the program or to simply attend. In addition, the artists will also be active in the public space of Bernau through their actions and interventions.

Conceived as a place of encounter and exchange between residents of the town Bernau bei Berlin and young international artists, this is the second time that KONTEXT LABOR BERNAU takes place. In the year 2014 the project successfully involved 244 residents in creative processes through eight artistic positions. An exhibition in the Kantorhaus, the oldest residential building in the town of Bernau, will show three projects, as well as the video and photographic documentation of the Kontext Labor Bernau 2014, which attempts to convey the complexity as well as the social impact of the various artistic projects that took place.

The two exhibitions in Kantorhaus and in the Office of Army Apparel will not only show the cultural potential of two empty historic buildingst, but they will also obtain the participation of new social groups in cultural activities. With that said, the town of Bernau wants to gradually develop a sustainable cultural policy based on the presence of contemporary art in the everyday life of its citizens. The Institute for Art in Context at the Berlin University of the Arts (Universität der Künste), which is the cooperation partner for this project, also stands for such a sustainable and resident-friendly comprehension of art.
